Here you will find information about what happens when you have received an answer to your application for protection.
If you are granted collective protection, you will receive a decision in the post with information about your residence permit. You will also receive a letter with a QR code that contains a link to a film. The film explains your rights and obligations in connection with being granted collective protection.
On the Directorate of Immigration's (UDI) website, you can read about your rights and obligations when you have been granted collective protection.
When you are granted a residence permit, you will receive an email. You will also receive a residence card as proof that you hold a residence permit in Norway.

A collective protection permit is granted for one year at a time. The collective protection scheme may be discontinued if Ukraine is considered safe again. The residence permit you have been granted will remain valid until it expires, even if the scheme is discontinued.
If you have been granted collective protection, your residence permit will automatically be extended when it expires. You do not need to do anything yourself to extend it.

A permanent residence permit means that you can live and work in Norway indefinitely. Collective protection is a residence permit that does not provide a basis for being granted a permanent residence permit for the first three years. This means that you cannot apply for a permanent residence permit after three years.
If the Directorate of Immigration (UDI) believes that you still need protection after three years, you may be granted a new temporary permit. The UDI will consider your application on an individual basis.
If you are granted a new permit after three years of collective protection, the new permit will form the basis for applying for a permanent residence permit in Norway later on.
Yes, you can travel abroad while you have collective protection. Please note that you must stay in Norway for at least half of the period the permit is valid.
When you travel abroad, you must have:
- a valid passport/immigrant’s passport/travel document for refugees
- a valid residence card
If you do not have a valid passport or residence card, you should not travel abroad. Any travel without a residence card will be at your own risk.
Nor should you book travel abroad until you have both a valid passport and a valid residence card.
